Camera
Thought of buying a DSLR camera lately but after reading about William Tsoi and kenrockwell exploit with their compact cameras, i am not so sure. That DSLR buying decision can wait. William and Ken website are full of very wonderful pic taken with their compact cam. There are also tips on how to achieve the same effects by adding some simple accessories to your compact camera.
Their recommendations:-
- get accessories like tripod, wide angle and macro lens to extend the capabilities of your camera
- learn to use the P, Av, Tv and M mode of the camera
- understand the physic of light
and voila!, you can shoot like pro too, with just your compact cam. but some scenarios just cant do with compact cam like event and sport. so, unless you are photojournalist and wedding photographers, you are better off with your compact cams.
i bought an adapter, a tripod and a wide/macro lens for my Canon A80 and tried out a few shots from my living room. One of the better one is the “sunrise” shot taken this morning.
Technical data for the “sunrise” shot
- setting: Av, 1/50s, f8 handheld
- manipulation: none
- post production: noise reduction and some sharpening
Do you like the “sunrise” shot?
The Amazing Vladimir!
You probably had heard or read about the story of an Englishman who went round the world in 80 days. I met one Russian, a Mr Vladimir Yarets who did something similar when i was in Middle Road last weekend. He had spent 8 years trying to go round the world but has yet to complete his journey. He hopes to get listed in the Guinness Book of Record “to encourage disabled people”. I had a good time going through the many wonderful photographs he took of his journey.
What i find more amazing about Vladimir’s feat is he did it despite his physical handicap. Vladimir is a deaf mute. He left Belarus in 2000 and had travelled the world ever since. You can read more about the man here.
I dont know Russian nor sign language otherwise, i will ask him how he got his license and pass custom.

Vladimir was kind enough to pose for pipit!
Signs
10 min haircut? a sign of busy city life or just a business gimmick? this quickie snip business had been pioneered by a japanese expat here and i am sure this is just a copy cat version of it. the real mccoy cost $1 more at $10 and can be found in modern mall in the city.
for the busy and forgetful driver! mall basement carparks are so caverneous nowadays i usually snap the parking lot number with my handphone camera before taking the lift up.
if you cannot afford the $200 fine, you can always call miss tan for a quick loan. opportunistic & smart advertising?
underground italian joint? if you are observant, you will notice that all mafia joint in the movie operates out of cafe or kopi tiam. by the same logic, this joint could be operated by the globalising mafia. this sign was found 10 m from the loan shark sign above. a coincidental or product of an over imaginative mind?
