Mayfield Flower Series
My first flower series from a friend garden in little island. Bugs and insects are too tough, flowers are a bit easier to shoot. The bokeh is a bit “clouded” as a result from trying to get more depth of field. My friend lives in Mayfield, hence the post name. Will try to learn the name of the flowers next time.

Singapore Young Photographer Award 2008
Met up with a friend and fellow Pentaxian at the Museum last Saturday. Wee Kiat has just won the Singapore Young Photographer Award 2008 and together with some friends, we were at the museum admiring his works and those of other merit winners. WK has taken up the hobby only two years ago but his talent is so immense he won awards while little bird like pipit can only blog about him!
WK used an entry level K100D, same as pipit, with a 10-20 wide angle lens as his kit lens. His landscape photographs are breathtaking and you can check him out at flicker under the nick of night86mare. He has since upgraded his camera body to K20D and with his price money of $5000, i am sure a few more lenses before he flies off to London after his school holiday ends at September.
For those who are interested in photography or just enjoy beautiful photographs, can drop by the Singapore museum. For those who like to meet him, he will be at Labrador Park this Saturday with some photography buffs to shoot some shorescape and sundown. Backbreaking Photo-hobby
Macro photography (MP) is really a hobby for the sadists. Who in their right frame of mind, beside an insect biologist, would go around looking for tiny insects, and upon finding one, crouching for hours straining both eyes and backs trying to get that perfect shot.
Ok, flowers can be macro photography subject too but the challenge is always to catch a good shot of that never stand still butterfly. Maybe MP is also for the egoist because i don’t know whats wrong with taking a stationary flower. At least it is bigger and would not fly away when you try to get near.
After trying two sessions on my own without result, finally consulted a sifu (master) in macro photography, and the massage auntie at my neighbourhood tui na joint for my sore back. The massage auntie told me not to go after the bees and wild flowers but my MP sifu is more philosophical.
“Let not chase after the fleeting but should wait for the right opportunity. Secure your base, and the tired and beautiful will come!” What sifu was trying to say was one should just find the right flower and wait for the insects to come. Reasonable but then this sound a lot like fishing. The only difference is nobody gets hurt!!

KL Street Scenes
Attended an exhibition in Hotel Istana in the big city of KL last week…
Had a first hand experience of KL famous peak hour traffic jam. A first for me. Getting caught in a jam is not too bad for me as i have my Pentax k100D with my tele lens mounted on it. There are many interesting street scene to “shoot” and i was just as trigger happy to comply. I had a lot of fun but could not say the same of my driver friend.
Yawning…. me too if i were to wait for a bus that seemed to take eternity to come.
“Don’t bang me!” seemed like what the guy was telling the Waja driver! This was actually a poster on a bus, shot at a traffic light junction…
KL has a lot of beautiful post-war buildings with Islamic-influenced architectural features. This photo was shot near the dataran merdeka where Malaysia was declared an independant country many years ago…
there are a lot of sky scrappers too. overall, KL gives me the feeling of a city in a hurry to develop, with the interspersing of sky scrappers and low-rise shop houses have seen better times. for a city that is this well developed, i was struck by the lack of mass public transport option like mass transit rail.
There are a lot of huge in-your-face type of advertising boards in this city touting a myriad of products and services. This one is trying to sell a mobile phone service. The model looks a bit like Eason Chan, the singer, from far, isn’t it?
We were stuck for like an hour and a half in the jam. It was already dusk when we reached PJ, the place i put up while in KL.
That’s all for my first experience in a KL jam. Will not be my last as….
I will be back! I dread the day i have to drive ahhh……
